Since 2024, BACKPULVER has been dedicated to exploring modalities for tracing the flow of artistic knowledge in between the artists involved across different media, raising the question of how such exchanges can be made accessible beyond the studio context.
For this purpose, BACKPULVER engages in an ongoing dialogue with artist Franziska Zauner, with whom BACKPULVER launched in 2024 the online exhibition Unclear Definitions on researchcatalogue.org.
Throughout Unclear Definitions, Franziska documented a series of morning training sessions and Diffractive Dialogues events in 2024. Her approach was not a classic documentary in the sense of an ‘inventory’ or ‘record/evidence’ of an event that is as objective, visual or written as possible. Rather, as she describes it, the research is understood as the art of documentation — as a translation of what has been experienced into what can be used for further generation of knowledge.
In this sense, BACKPULVER opens the documentation process to different artists, allowing for diverse perspectives and translations of the shared practices throughout its one-year programs.
